NYC Art & Walking Around the City
New York City traces its origins to Fort Amsterdam and a trading post founded by Dutch colonists. The settlement was named New Amsterdam in 1626 and was chartered as a city in 1653. The city came under English control in 1664 and was renamed New York. New York City became the most populous urbanized area in the world in the early 1920s. In the 20th century, New York developed into a world center for culture, trade and finance. The city has earned the nickname "Big Apple".
